Lisbon rewards a weekend that leaves room for detours. The city is steep, bright, tiled, and full of small decisions: one more viewpoint, one more espresso, one more street that seems to fold into the river.

Friday evening arrival

Arrive without over-planning the first night. Check in, change shoes, and let the evening begin with a short walk through Chiado or Príncipe Real. Dinner should be late enough to feel local but not so late that Saturday disappears. Choose a room with linen napkins, grilled fish, and a wine list that does not need performance.

Saturday morning in Alfama

Start early, before the cruise groups thicken the narrow streets. Alfama is best taken slowly: laundry overhead, small tiled facades, views that appear without warning. Stop for coffee and something sweet, then walk toward the castle only if the queue is gentle.

Afternoon notes

Spend the afternoon between shops, bookstores, and a long lunch. Lisbon is not a city to conquer by list. It is better with pauses: a ceramic bowl wrapped in paper, a tram passing too full to board, a glass of vinho verde in a shaded square.

Sunday before leaving

On Sunday, choose one neighborhood and keep the route compact. A market, a museum, and a final coffee are enough. The best souvenir may be a note to return when there is time for the train to Cascais.

  • Pack shoes that can manage stone streets.
  • Book one dinner, leave one evening open.
  • Choose a hotel near the neighborhoods you want to walk.
  • Keep a morning free for wandering rather than reservations.
